Birth Control Q & A

What is birth control?

Birth control is meant to prevent unwanted pregnancies and allow you to plan your family how you see fit. There are a number of options available for adolescents and women who are interested in birth control for pregnancy prevention.

You may also need to use birth control to address other underlying health issues, such as irregular or heavy periods or to stabilize your reproductive hormone levels.

What birth control options are available?

The RPW Obstetrics and Gynecology staff offers a variety of birth control options. In addition to hormonal birth control pills, you have access to reversible birth control methods like Depo-Provera® injections.

The team also offers prescriptions and placement services for the latest intrauterine devices (IUDs) including:

  • Skyla®
  • Liletta®
  • Mirena®
  • Kyleena®
  • Paragard®

You may also be a good candidate for the Nexplanon® birth control implant to prevent unwanted pregnancies and allow you to plan for the family you want.

Which birth control is right for me?

The type of birth control you should use depends on your personal preferences, medical history, your existing health, and your plans for a family. Your RPW Obstetrics and Gynecology provider can help you make the most informed decision during your consultation.

If you’re over 35 or a smoker, you may not be able to use forms of hormonal birth control due to an increased risk for heart disease and stroke. The RPW Obstetrics and Gynecology team can provide you with other options to prevent unwanted pregnancies without putting your health at risk.

If you’re interested in permanent forms of birth control, the RPW Obstetrics and Gynecology team offers on-site sterilization services for women, such as minimally invasive tubal ligations.

The staff provides counseling services for sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention, as not all types of birth control can protect you from the disease. In addition to using pills or the IUD to prevent pregnancy, you must still use condoms and other safe-sex practices to prevent the spread of infections.
