Infertility Q & A

How common is infertility?

Infertility affects one in eight couples by one estimate. Although infertility was once considered a woman’s problem, statistics suggest that women and men share the burden of infertility.

Female-related issues account for 40% of cases of infertility, while male factors account for another 40%. The remaining 20% is from an unknown cause.

By age 40, a woman has less than a 10% chance of conceiving per cycle. A man’s fertility also declines with age, but not as predictably as a woman’s.

What causes infertility?

Female infertility is usually due to irregular ovulation or a lack of ovulation, which may show up as missed periods or irregular periods.

A low sperm count or problems with the health of sperm usually cause male infertility. Other causes of infertility include:

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Uterine anomalies
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Problems with the thyroid or pituitary glands

Scarring or blockages of the fallopian tubes also makes it more difficult to conceive.

When should I see a doctor about infertility?

Consider seeing a practitioner at RPW Obstetrics and Gynecology for an infertility work-up if you have an irregular menstrual cycle and you’re trying to get pregnant.

It’s also a good idea to come in for an evaluation if you’ve been having regular, unprotected sex for a year without getting pregnant. If you’re over age 35, and you haven’t gotten pregnant after six months of trying, you also want to visit RPW Obstetrics and Gynecology for an evaluation.

What is an infertility evaluation?

Your doctor at RPW Obstetrics and Gynecology performs an initial evaluation of you and your partner that includes a comprehensive medical history. Based on your results, they recommend appropriate infertility tests to determine the cause of infertility.

For women, they recommend blood and urine tests to assess:

  • Progesterone level
  • Thyroid function
  • Prolactin level
  • Ovarian reserve (number of eggs)
  • Luteinizing hormone

Men typically need a semen analysis.

How is infertility treated?

Your practitioner at RPW Obstetrics and Gynecology guides you through your treatment options based on the results of your infertility evaluation.

Minimally invasive surgery to remove an endometrial growth, for example, may make it possible for you to conceive. If you need advanced treatment, they may refer you to a specialist.

If you’re having trouble conceiving, don’t assume that infertility care has to be complicated or expensive. Rely on the expertise of the doctors at RPW Obstetrics and Gynecology. Call today or book a consultation online.
